Mistakes to Avoid to Maximize Curb Appeal

Mistakes to Avoid to Maximize Curb Appeal

June 30, 2020

While you know that we spend our days (and sometimes nights) working to reinforce your home, you may also be privy to our general passion for homes. If the VIC Underpinners team does our job right (and we tend to), your home will stay upright and safe, but if we were to avoid giving advice on the rest of your property, we simply wouldn’t feel right about ourselves. Sometimes we give optimistic advice and sometimes we give cautionary advice. Today is a cautionary day.

You know those houses that you walk by where you shake your heads and wonder what they were thinking? You’re not trying to be rude, but you know that the first impression of a home creates its curb appeal, which in turn can speak to its value, should you ever decide to sell. To be fair, there are definitely tips and tricks we can share to maximize curb appeal, but today, we’re talking about what you should avoid. Read on for more information:

  • Fences that are so high that they obscure a view of your home. Hey, we get privacy. We’re all about it and work with companies all the time to keep everything that’s important to you, safe. But there’s a happy balance here. If you find the appropriate height and style of fence, intruders will know that you mean business, but you’ll still be able to showcase the landscaping that you worked so hard on.
  • Unkept landscaping. Remember that landscaping we were just mentioning? Well, you’ll want to keep it in good shape, and not just for curb appeal. Landscaping is one of those things that if you let it run wild, it will just cause you more trouble in the long run. This shouldn’t be a huge maintenance lift, but it’s also an exercise in knowing what you can handle when it comes to taking care of your plants and flowers.
  • Paint jobs that are overdue. Nothing says ‘lack of care’ like peeling paint – on your home’s exterior, the shutters or the roof. This is another popular project that homeowners tend to put off because they think it’s cost-intensive and time-intensive. While it is an investment, it’s one that pays off with exponential dividends.
  • The by-products of foundation damage. There’s no hidden agenda here, but there’s a reason that we’re finishing off today’s list with the work that we really see as the most important. If you have issues with your home or business’s foundation, those problems will radiate to every single part of your property. In fact, they can really impact every item above over time. But, don’t be unnecessarily stressed if you’re not sure whether you have foundation issues or not, there are quick and easy ways to determine this. Any cracks in the walls, floors or ceiling, as well as excess moisture, are a surefire way to know that it’s time to call a company like VIC Underpinners.
